Rusk is one of those products that sells every single day, in every season, in almost every kirana store in North India. That steady demand is exactly why so many small traders look at taking up a rusk agency. It is not glamorous, but it is dependable.
Dependable does not mean effortless though. The agencies that do well are the ones that sorted out a few practical things before the first truck arrived.
Know your territory before you know your margin
The first question is not what you will earn per carton. It is how many shops you can realistically reach every week. A rusk agency lives on repeat orders from kirana stores, tea stalls, canteens, hostels and small sweet shops.
Walk your area. Count the outlets. Note which brands they already stock and whether they complain about supply. If three shops tell you their current rusk supplier turns up late, that is your opening.
Ask the manufacturer clearly which area you will cover and whether anyone else holds the same territory. Overlapping agencies fight on price and both lose.
Storage is where rusk is won or lost
Rusk is dry, but it does not like moisture. A damp godown in the monsoon can soften an entire stock in weeks. You need a clean, dry, raised storage space, ideally with cartons kept off the floor on pallets or wooden planks and away from walls.
Rotate stock properly. Older batches go out first, every time. Shopkeepers notice dates, and one pack that tastes stale can cost you an outlet.
Get the credit terms in writing
Most retail runs on some credit. Decide upfront how many days you will give shops and how many days the manufacturer gives you. If you pay the company in advance but give retailers thirty days, your money is stuck in the market and growth stalls.
Write it down. Payment terms, return policy for damaged packs, and who bears the cost of transport breakage. Verbal promises tend to be forgotten at exactly the wrong time.
A small mix sells better than a single product
Rusk alone keeps the van moving, but adding a few cookie varieties makes each shop visit more useful. A shopkeeper who can order rusk, jeera cookies and a sweet cookie from one supplier saves time, and that loyalty is worth more than a slightly higher margin from a competitor.
That is why many agencies prefer a manufacturer with both rusk and cookies under one name. Riddhima Foods in Aligarh, for instance, makes suji elaichi rusk and milk rusk alongside a full 100% eggless cookie range across dry fruit, sweet and salted varieties.
Check the manufacturer, not just the product
Visit the unit if you can. Look at hygiene, how the packing area is kept, and whether the batch codes and dates on packs are clear. Ask for the FSSAI licence number and check it is printed on every pack.
Ask how they handle complaints from shops. Ask how quickly they replace damaged or short stock. A good manufacturer will answer directly and will usually be happy to have you see the place.
Also ask about marketing support. Shelf strips, posters or a few sample packs for new outlets make the first month much easier.
Start lean, then grow
You do not need a fleet of vans on day one. Many successful rusk agencies started with a single small vehicle and one helper covering a tight route. Build the route, prove the repeat orders, then expand to the next area.
The business rewards patience and reliability far more than big launches.
Questions to ask in your first meeting
Before you sign anything, ask the manufacturer a short list of direct questions. Which products are available all year and which are seasonal? What is the minimum order per dispatch? How are prices revised, and with how much notice? Who handles damaged stock claims, and how fast? Is there a sales person who will visit your area with you in the first few weeks?
Write down the answers in the meeting itself. Compare two or three manufacturers side by side before you choose. The one that answers clearly and calmly is usually the one that will be easier to work with when something goes wrong.
Festive and wedding seasons change everything
Demand for cookies and rusk climbs sharply around Diwali, the wedding season and winter. Plan stock a month ahead of these peaks, confirm dispatch dates with the manufacturer early, and make sure your storage can handle the extra volume without cartons touching damp floors.
